The Philosophy of Muay Boran
The philosophy of Muay Boran is to be prepared for all styles. Since all styles
ultimately break down into the same philosophies of self defense, self
cultivation, and ultimately to not have to fight at all, Muay Boran taps into
this energy and exploits it with explosive speed and simultaneous attack and
When you become a master, you shed the idea that your skills are for fighting.
The skills are stepping stones to cultivate a confidence and an inner peace that
far surpasses any fighting skills that one may possess or encounter. Of course,
there is always someone stronger, younger, and faster but what they lack is this
Learning from fighters-
Muay Thai is taught on a need to know basis. Muay thai fighters have
exceptional skill, but it is only skill in What They Have Been Taught. This is
why different regional camps teach different emphasis on techniques. Being a
good Muay Thai fighter does not automatically equal being a good teacher. The
one to learn from is the Kru's son, or the next inthe family line. These people
are taught everything in order to carry on the legacy and lineage. Although
this next generation will fight competitively, they are preserved in order to
carry this lineage. In essence, they "need to know" it all.
Modern Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is a form of kickboxing.
It is regulated and although it allows elbows, knees, feet and fist, there are
rule in place as to how the boxer can use these strikes so that although they
may and usually do injure their opponent, they will not do damage to the point
of killing them or disabling them, making them unable to fight again.
Muay Boran, in contrast, is an umbrella term for all ancient unarmed fighting
Thailand, before the introduction of modern rules and equipment. “Muay” is
roughly translated as “Boxing” and “Boran”. As the father Muay Thai, it was born
on the battlefield and used to quickly disable the opponent and to keep moving
so as not to be attacked by multitude of other apponents on the battlefield.
MuayThai is a devastating sport and effective as a self-defense art. It is also,
however, optimized for the ring. The moves of Muay Thai are derived from Muay
Boran, but are distilled and simplified in order to be more easily regulated.
This means that a lot of the fatal and extremely dangerous techniques of Muay
Boran are removed. Muay Boran’s main focus is quick, efficient effectiveness in
a life or death combat setting. It includes lower stances and attacks to vital
areas such as the neck, and disabling attacks to the knees and other joints.
The attire of Muay Boran consists of hand wraps made of hemp or cotton wrope,
longer, looser (usually cotton) shorts, and a traditional scarf worn around the
waist. Although it is commonly thought that fighters would dip their rope wraps
in broken glass, this is a myth. They did, however, dip them in resin to them
sticky in order to clinch more effectively and also harder in order to block and
strike more effectively. Modern Muay Thai shorts came about because some
fighters’preference was to roll their shorts up to allow higherkicks, and
eventually simply made them shorter.
